DAILY SCHEDULE

(subject to change)

Day  /  1

Morning

Commence about ½ hr after breakfast

  • A walk to explore local vegetation and gather foliage to work with. A chance to bond with each other, with the local environment, and an opportunity to learn how to select likely printing material, and discuss how to gather in a way that is respectful of the plant and the environment

  • Sampling: On the first day you will be provided with ready mordanted fabric so that you can get started on sampling straight away. You will make a range of small samples with the aim of learning several techniques, and discovering the printing qualities of the local vegetation. Our samples will steam while we enjoy lunch.

 

Lunch break – relax and swim during the hottest part of the day

Afternoon

  • Open first bundles and learn from results

  • More sampling, exploring the interactions between leaf and dye

  • Understanding discharging leaves

  • Teaching session: mordanting

  • Practical session: work in small teams to mordant cloth for the next couple of days

  • Wrap up: summarise the day’s learning and outline the next day’s activities

Day  /  2

Morning

  • Teaching session: tannins

  • Walk to gather foliage

  • Printing with natural dyes and tannins 

  • While bundles are cooking, teaching session on indigo and combining indigo with ecoprint 

  • Unbundle and learn from samples – plan what you would like to make in the afternoon

 

Lunch break – relax and swim during the hottest part of the day

Afternoon

  • Work on individual projects 

  • Make indigo vat

  • Wrap up session and plan tomorrow’s activities

Day  /  3

Morning

  • work on individual projects combining ecoprint, natural dyes and indigo

  • Teaching session: printing garments

 

Lunch break – relax and swim during the hottest part of the day

 

Afternoon

  • work on individual projects incorportaing combinations of ecoprint, natural dyes, tannins and indigo

  • Wrap up session. Plan your projects for the final day so you can commence printing straight away and get the most out of the day

Day  /  4

Morning

  • Work on individual projects, with your preferred combination of ecoprint natural dye ,tannins and indigo

  • Students to work on individual projects, with their preferred combination of ecoprint natural dye and indigo

On this final day Iwe will have put final bundles into the pot at lunchtime - no printing in the afternoon

Lunch break – relax and swim during the hottest part of the day

Afternoon

  • Reveal and discuss the morning’s work

  • Question and answers about the week’s learning

  • Discussion about how students may want to take their botanical print learning forward

  • Clear studio and prepare textiles for show and tell

  • Ecoprinting on paper and leather

Morning

  • Final meal together for a show-and-share
